Fog machine, hazer or low-lying fog – which fog effect?
A fog machine produces dense clouds for visible effects, a hazer creates a fine haze that makes light beams visible, and a low-lying fog machine keeps the fog close to the ground – ideal for the “cloud” effect during the wedding dance. Which effect is right depends on the desired result: eye-catcher, light show or ground-level carpet.
Fog machine, hazer and low-lying fog compared
All three produce “fog”, but with very different results. Your choice determines whether you get a brief eye-catcher, a permanently visible light show or a low-lying ground fog.
| Effect | Impact | Ideal for | Special feature |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fog machine | dense, visible clouds | effects, stage, intro | emits in bursts |
| Hazer | fine, even haze | light shows, moving heads | makes light beams visible |
| Low-lying fog | low-lying fog carpet | wedding dance, stage | fog stays on the ground |
When should I use a fog machine?
The classic fog machine is the all-rounder for dense effects: dramatic intros, stage fog or party moments. It emits the fog in bursts and fills a room quickly. Watch out for smoke detectors – in many venues dense clouds trigger the fire alarm system. For an even atmosphere, a hazer is usually the better choice.
Why a hazer for light shows?
A hazer produces a very fine, floating haze that hardly stands out as “fog” – but makes every light beam visible. Moving heads, lasers and effect spotlights only really come into their own with haze. The haze lasts a long time and spreads evenly, which is why hazers are standard at DJ sets, concerts and light shows.
The “dancing on clouds” effect: low-lying fog
Low-lying fog machines cool the fog so that it stays close to the ground and forms a carpet instead of rising. The effect is the classic for the first wedding dance and for atmospheric stage settings. Low-lying fog usually requires special fluid or dry ice and a level surface without strong drafts.
💡 Important: Clarify the fire alarm system with the venue in advance. For sensitive rooms, haze is often less problematic than dense fog clouds – when in doubt, test beforehand.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a fog machine and a hazer?
A fog machine produces dense, visible clouds for effects, a hazer creates a fine haze that mainly makes light beams visible. For light shows you use haze, for dramatic effects you use fog.
Does fog trigger the fire alarm system?
Dense fog can trigger optical smoke detectors. Always clarify this with the venue in advance. Fine haze is usually less critical, but the same applies here: coordinate beforehand.
Which fog is suitable for the wedding dance?
Low-lying fog. It stays close to the ground and creates the “dancing on clouds” effect. A normal fog machine, by contrast, rises and spreads throughout the room.
